Apple rootstocks react to latent viruses with graft union failure, pitting, or necrosis, even though scions appear healthy. These viruses, stem grooving, stem pitting, and chlorotic leaf spot, rarely cause symptoms on commercial cultivars. Use only virus-certified propagation material and rootstocks to prevent incompatibility problems.
