Apple cores show fungal growth (Alternaria, Penicillium) in the locules, visible when cut open. Mild temperatures and wet bloom favor disease on open-sinus cultivars like Delicious and Golden Delicious. Use scab fungicides during bloom, harvest at proper maturity, and avoid dump tanks for susceptible cultivars.
Fungicides used for scab and powdery mildew during bloom generally keep these diseases in check. Harvest fruit at the correct stage of maturity.
