Regional Notes

Salt injury results from accumulation of sodium chloride in soils or from road salt exposure. Leach soils with fresh water to reduce salt concentration. Select salt-tolerant varieties for sensitive areas. Avoid planting near salt sources. Salt damage is particularly problematic near roads, walkways, and areas with poor drainage. Leaching and proper species selection help manage this Early detection and prompt management of symptoms help limit disease spread.

Remove affected material as you find it and clean up any fallen debris where salt injury spores can overwinter. Improve air circulation around susceptible plants through selective pruning. Avoid overhead irrigation during vulnerable growth periods. If the problem is persistent, your local Extension office can recommend current fungicide or bactericide options for your specific situation.

Cultural Controls

  • Provide adequate irrigation.
  • Mulch around plants to prevent evaporation that can concentrate minerals in the root zone.
  • Improve drainage with addition of organic matter or by using raised beds.
  • Leach away excess salts by occasional heavy irrigation.
  • Decrease use of inorganic fertilizers.
  • Water potted plants from top only, and discard water that drains through.
