Rhododendron whitefly

Small whiteflies (0.04-0.08 inch long) infest tender new leaves on rhododendrons in Western Washington, causing yellowing and leaf curling, particularly on branch tips. Whiteflies produce copious honeydew that develops into black sooty mold growth, creating an unsightly coating. Infested leaves often display white powdery residue and sooty mold accumulation on stems and foliage beneath.

This whitefly is primarily aesthetic; heavy infestations can damage susceptible plants but rarely cause serious health impacts. Reduce nitrogen and switch to slow-release fertilizers. Gently vacuum plants in early morning. Horticultural oil with thorough coverage provides low-toxicity control.
