Lagerstroemia hybrids (Lythraceae) are crosses between L. indica and L. fauriei (Japanese crape myrtle) developed primarily at the U.S. National Arboretum. These deciduous trees combine the showy summer flowers and fall color of L. indica with the superior bark character, vigor, and powdery mildew resistance of L. fauriei. Mature sizes range from 10 to 30 feet depending on the selection.

Hybrid crape myrtles perform best in full sun on moist, well-drained soil. Their exfoliating bark reveals cinnamon-brown to pale cream mottled trunks, providing strong winter interest. Fall color includes shades of orange, red, and yellow. Key cultivars include 'Natchez' (white flowers, 25 feet, outstanding bark), 'Muskogee' (lavender-pink, 20 feet), 'Acoma' (white, 10 feet, semi-dwarf), and 'Zuni' (lavender, 15 feet). All are documented as mildew resistant. Hardy in Zones 6 to 7.
