Phyllostachys nigra (Poaceae) is a running bamboo native to Hunan Province, China. It reaches up to 35 feet tall. The culms emerge green and gradually turn jet black over one to two years, creating a striking contrast against the bright green foliage.
Black bamboo spreads by rhizomes and requires containment measures in most garden settings. It grows in full sun to part shade on moist, well-drained soil. The distinctive black culms are prized for decorative use, furniture, and crafts. Like all running bamboos, it can become invasive without management.
