Shining willow, also called Pacific willow, red willow, or whiplash willow, is native to northern and western North America where it occurs in wetland habitats as a deciduous large shrub or small tree. It reaches 4-15 meters tall and is the largest willow found in British Columbia. The leaves are glossy and lanceolate, and the plant has reddish twigs.
This species naturally colonizes wet areas along streams and riverbanks and tolerates fluctuating water levels. It prefers full sun and moist to wet soils. It serves as a fast-growing option for riparian restoration across its broad native range from California to the northern Rockies.
