Sage (genus Salvia) is the largest genus in the mint family (Lamiaceae) with just under 1,000 species of shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and annuals. The genus has a worldwide distribution and includes species with gray, green, or variegated foliage. Flowers vary widely in size and color, and many species attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.
Salvias range from tender annuals to cold-hardy perennials and include species suited to drought, full shade, and wet conditions. Many are aromatic and edible or medicinal. Multiple cultivars and hybrids are available in the ornamental trade, with varying hardiness, bloom times, and growth habits.
