Giant chain fern is a native fern found along the western coast of North America from British Columbia to Baja California and Nevada. It grows in canyons, foothills, springs, and streambeds in redwood, coniferous, and mixed forests. Fronds can reach 4-6 ft long.

This large native fern requires moist stream-side and forest environments with consistent moisture and shade. It is adapted to acidic, humus-rich soils and does not tolerate drought or direct sun exposure.
