Mountain Pink Currant

Ribes nevadense

Grossulariaceae · broadleaf · native

Mountain pink currant is a sprawling multi-stemmed shrub reaching 3-6 feet, endemic to high mountain elevations (4500-7500 feet) in southern Oregon, Nevada, and California. The thin, rounded leaves (3-6 cm wide) are three to five-lobed with small, crenate (rounded-tooth) margins and bright green color.

Mountain pink currant grows best in light shade and moist to moderately dry, well-drained soil; it often occurs naturally on stream banks and in meadow margins. Provide occasional summer water and good drainage. The plant is hardy to zone 5 and is relatively pest-free. The blue, waxy-coated berries ripening in summer are edible and provide excellent food for birds and small mammals.
