Oregon Myrtle

Umbellularia californica

Lauraceae · broadleaf · native

Oregon myrtle (California bay, California-laurel) is a broadleaf evergreen tree or shrub, reaching 25-30 feet in cultivation (occasionally to 70 feet in ideal conditions), with loose, spreading foliage in shade but a compact, rounded gum-drop shape in full sun.

Oregon myrtle is quite tender in the interior PNW but thrives in maritime climates with cool, moist winters. Provide full sun to part shade and well-drained soil; once established, the plant is drought tolerant. The hard, dense wood is prized for woodworking and turning. The aromatic foliage is used in cooking (sparingly, as it is intensely flavored) and in crafts.
