Elytroderma needle cast causes needle yellowing and premature shedding on conifers. You see needle browning and casting. The fungal disease affects tree appearance. Remove infected needles and improve air circulation.

Management depends on catching it early. Scout susceptible plants regularly and remove affected tissue before the pathogen can spread. Improve growing conditions by addressing drainage, spacing, and irrigation practices. For persistent or severe cases, contact your local Master Gardener program or Extension office for treatment options specific to your host plants.

In summer, infected needles develop dark lines (fungal structures) which open along a lengthwise sli | Infected needles usually drop in fall and winter but may turn gray and remain on the tree.

Cultural Controls

  • Do not plant in low areas with poor air drainage.
  • Space plantings and prune lower branches to provide good air circulation.
  • Control weeds under and near plantings to reduce humidity.
  • Remove diseased trees to prevent spread of infection.
