Ranunculaceae · perennial · introduced

Last updated

Lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis, Ranunculaceae) is an evergreen clumping perennial from northeast Greece, Turkey, and the Caucasus, reaching about 1 foot tall and wide. Saucer-shaped, nodding flowers (7 to 10 centimeters) appear in late winter to early spring in pink, red, burgundy, white, and green tones. Glossy, palmate, evergreen leaves provide year-round texture.

Lenten rose grows in part shade on moist, well-drained soil (pH 6.0 to 8.0) with rapid growth rate, hardy in Zones 4a to 9b. It tolerates deer browse, heavy shade, dry soil, shallow rocky substrates, and urban conditions. All parts are toxic and may cause contact dermatitis. The cultivar 'Royal Heritage' is the primary selection. No significant pest or disease issues are documented.
