Brewer's Oak

Quercus garryana var. breweri

Fagaceae · broadleaf · native

Brewer's oak is a dwarf form of Garry oak, rarely exceeding 5-6 feet in height. This compact variant exhibits the same leathery leaves, gray-brown bark, and general character as the full-size Garry oak but maintains its diminutive stature even at maturity. The form occurs naturally in harsh, wind-swept sites of the Klamath region, suggesting adaptation to extreme exposure and shallow soils.

Use Brewer's oak in rock gardens, bank stabilization, or as a specimen shrub where space is limited. It prefers full sun to part shade and well-drained, often rocky or serpentine soils. The plant is susceptible to sudden oak death in areas where the pathogen is present; monitor closely and ensure good air circulation. Once established, it is extremely drought tolerant and long-lived.
