Data Maturity Baseline

This profile contains verified disease data from extension databases. Regional field notes and expert review are in progress.

Multiple viruses reduce pear tree vigor and production, sometimes causing fruit malformation like stony pit or leaf symptoms. Different viruses may be confused or occur together. Use virus-tested clones for nursery stock. Remove infected mature trees. Viruses spread only through affected scion wood, not by insects, making prevention the best strategy.

Use clones that have been tested and found free of all known viruses to produce nursery stock and to top-work virus-free trees. Remove infected trees.

Cultural Controls

  • The use of certified virus-tested (and found to be free of all known viruses) planting material is the preferred strategy for protection from this disease. Thermotherapy (24 to 32 days at 38°C) and/or apical meristem culture have been used to eliminate various viruses. References Posnette, A.F. and Cropley, R. 1956. Apple mosaic viruses.
