What Damage Looks Like

Adults feed on foliage in spring and fall, producing characteristic rice-grain-shaped holes. Larvae mine inside leaves between the upper and lower epidermis, producing irregular blotch mines that turn brown. Heavy infestations produce extensive leaf blotching and may cause early defoliation; injury is mostly cosmetic on established trees.

Cultural Controls

  • Rake and destroy leaf litter to reduce overwintering populations.
  • Most established trees tolerate damage with minimal intervention.
  • Conserve natural enemies; parasitic wasps attack the larvae.
