Everglow Sedge

Carex morrowii

Cyperaceae · grass grasslike · introduced

Last updated

You recognize Morrow's sedge by its dense, mounding form and fine-textured, evergreen foliage reaching about 1 foot tall and wide. The grass-like leaves are narrow and bright green, forming a neat, compact clump. In spring, you'll notice short-lived flower spikes with 4-6 small flowers, though flowers are insignificant compared to the foliage display. Cultivars like 'Ice Dance' and 'Aurea-Variegata' offer variegated leaves that brighten shady areas, making them popular ornamental choices for containers and small spaces.

Morrow's sedge grows in moist, acidic soil in full sun to part shade; at full sun sites, maintain constant moisture. In shadier spots, the plant can tolerate occasional droughts. It is slow-growing, easy-to-grow, and trouble-free. Rarely troubled by aphids and rhizoctonia, it makes an excellent choice for mass plantings in beds under trees and shady borders, or as an accent in containers or rock gardens. This evergreen perennial is good for winter interest and works well in fairy gardens and rain gardens. Divide plants in spring or fall.
