A variety of the tree rhododendron (R. arboreum), one of the tallest species in the genus. R. arboreum var. roseum is noted in the nursery trade with one cultivar available. Like all members of the Ericaceae, it blooms on previous season's growth and should be pruned immediately after flowering.

Requires acidic, well-drained soil. As a variety of a Himalayan tree species, it needs sheltered conditions and is best suited to mild, humid climates. All parts are toxic if ingested.
