An evergreen tree native to the Himalayas (Nepal, Bhutan, India, and southern Tibet), reaching 10 to 25 feet. Flowers are typically white with purple spots but can be pink or crimson, about 2 inches across. Named for the cinnamon-colored indumentum on the leaf undersides.

A large-growing species best suited to sheltered woodland settings with ample space. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
