Last updated

An evergreen tree species native to eastern Sichuan, western Hubei, and eastern Guizhou in China, ranging from 6 to 30 feet. Large fragrant funnel-shaped flowers up to 4 inches long, white to occasionally rosy pink with a greenish blotch at the base. One of the latest-blooming rhododendron species, flowering in mid to late summer.

The late bloom period (July to August) extends the rhododendron season well past the main spring display. Fragrant flowers are a bonus on a plant this large. Variable mature size; can become a substantial specimen tree in favorable conditions. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
