An evergreen shrub reaching 6 feet. Dark red bell-shaped (tubular campanulate) flowers with black to brown spotting, about 2 inches across.

The dark red coloration is among the deepest in the genus. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
