A broadleaf evergreen tree native to western Szechwan, China, reaching 15 ft in the landscape. Young shoots are scaly. Leaves are elliptic to oblong-elliptic, 2.5 to 9 cm long, rounded or blunt at the tip. Flowers are purple, mauve, or rosy-purple, openly funnel-shaped, in trusses of 2 to 6.
Requires acidic, well-drained soil in a sheltered position. One of the larger lepidote species, valued for its elegant upright form and refined foliage. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts are toxic if ingested.
