Rhododendron falconeri subsp. falconeri

Ericaceae · broadleaf evergreen shrub · introduced

Last updated

An evergreen shrub native to Nepal, Bhutan, and northeastern India, reaching 5 feet in cultivation (larger in habitat). Fragrant bell-shaped flowers about 2 inches long, creamy white or pale yellow with a conspicuous purple blotch at the base, in large trusses of 20 or more blooms. Remarkable foliage: large leaves with thick cinnamon to rust-colored indumentum beneath.

Grown as much for its foliage as its flowers. The large leaves and heavy indumentum make this one of the most architecturally striking species in the genus. Requires sheltered conditions and ample moisture. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
