An evergreen shrub native to a broad range across China (Sichuan, Hubei, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, Anhui, Zhejiang), reaching 6 feet. Wide bell-shaped flowers (funnel-campanulate), white, pale pink, or pale lavender, about 2½ to 3 inches across.

Late-blooming for the genus, extending the rhododendron season into early summer. An important parent in hybridization, contributing late bloom timing and large flower size to many modern cultivars. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
