An evergreen shrub reaching 4 feet. Large widely funnel-campanulate flowers about 4 inches across, vivid purplish-red (sometimes described as hard pink), in ball-shaped clusters of about 10 blooms.
Compact habit for a large-flowered hybrid. The vivid purplish-red coloration is distinctive among mid-sized elepidote rhododendrons. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
