Hino-Crimson Azalea

Rhododendron 'Hino-Crimson'

Ericaceae · broadleaf evergreen shrub · introduced

Last updated

A low, compact, mounding evergreen azalea reaching 2 to 3 feet in 10 years and 3 to 4 feet at maturity, spreading to 3 to 5 feet wide. Small single flowers, 1 to 1¼ inches across, bright crimson red, produced so abundantly that the plant appears solid-colored at peak bloom. Midseason flowering. A Kurume hybrid of R. amoenum crossed with 'Hinode-giri'.

The most intense crimson red available in the Kurume group. Hardy to approximately -10°F (Zone 6a-9a). Part shade to full sun on acidic, well-drained soil (pH 4.5-6.0). Afternoon shade improves bloom longevity and prevents flower fade. Compact enough for edging, mass planting, or container culture. Out of bloom, the fine texture provides a neutral green backdrop. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
