An evergreen shrub native to Nepal, Sikkim, and Bhutan, reaching 5 feet in cultivation. Somewhat tubular flowers about 1 to 2 inches long, in compact clusters of 12 to 20 blooms, in various colors. Notable for its smooth, peeling bark and large leaves.

Grown as much for the ornamental bark and bold foliage as for the flowers. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
