An evergreen shrub native to Japan (widely distributed from Honshu to Yakushima), reaching 2 feet. Pale dull-yellow broadly bell-shaped flowers, 1 to 2 inches wide, in small clusters of 2 to 6 blooms.
One of the most compact yellow-flowered species. Dwarf forms (var. ozawae) reach only a few inches tall and are valued for rock gardens and alpine troughs. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
