A deciduous azalea native to the mountains of Kyushu, Japan, at 4,000 to 5,000 feet, reaching 2 feet. Small flowers typically in shades of purple, but may be red, pink, or rarely white. One of the parent species of the Kurume azalea group.

The compact dwarf habit and high-elevation origin contribute cold hardiness and small stature to the Kurume hybrid line. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
