A broadleaf evergreen shrub native to high elevations in southwest China, upper Burma, and southeastern Tibet, where it grows between 9,000 and 13,000 ft. Reaches approximately 5 ft in 10 years with an upright, compact habit. Leaves are elliptic to rounded, glaucous beneath. Flowers are mauve, rose, or lavender-pink, widely funnel-shaped, in trusses of 3 to 8.

The species name means "growing on mountains," reflecting its alpine origins. Valued for its compact habit and blue-green foliage. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts are toxic if ingested.
