An evergreen shrub native to southwestern Georgia and eastern Alabama, reaching 4 feet tall and spreading to 6 to 8 feet. Orange-red to red funnel-shaped flowers in clusters of 4 to 5 blooms. One of the latest-blooming native azaleas, flowering in July and August.

The mid-summer bloom period is unusual among both native and cultivated azaleas, extending the genus's flowering season well past the spring peak. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
