A broadleaf evergreen dwarf shrub, 'Purple Gem' is a compact lepidote hybrid producing masses of small, vivid purple flowers in early to mid-spring. The small, dark green leaves take on bronze tones in winter. Blooms on previous season's growth.

Requires acidic, well-drained soil. The dwarf habit and profuse flowering make it well suited to rock gardens, borders, and foundation plantings. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts are toxic if ingested.
