A broadleaf deciduous shrub native to central and southern Japan, this is the white-flowered variety of R. serpyllifolium (the wild thyme azalea). Much-branched and upright in habit, it carries small, delicate white flowers. In some forms the flowers are tinged with pink or rose.

One of the smallest-leaved azalea species, with thyme-like foliage that gives the plant a fine, airy texture unusual among rhododendrons. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts are toxic if ingested.
