Ericaceae · broadleaf evergreen shrub · introduced

Last updated

A compact evergreen shrub native to western Sichuan, China, at 7,000 to 11,000 feet, reaching 3 feet. Bell-shaped flowers about 1½ inches long, white to pinkish, often spotted or blotched red, in loose clusters of 6 to 10 blooms. Dense foliage with notable indumentum.

Compact habit and heavy indumentum make this a foliage plant as much as a flowering one. High-elevation origin contributes cold tolerance. Acidic, well-drained soil. Twenty-one diseases and 15 pests documented at the genus level. All parts contain grayanotoxins and are toxic if ingested.
